going mad
means going insane

getting mad
means getting angry

Since "mad" has two meanings (it can either mean
"insane/crazy" or "angry/irate") I think it is better to say "angry" instead of "mad" so the meaning is clear,
or say "insane" if you mean "crazy."

Some sources consider using "mad" to mean "angry" as improper slang, and strictly interpret "mad" to mean "insane" as the formal meaning.
