Grunge... It made it possible for people to be rock stars, without getting very good at their instruments. Guitar players stopped practicing to be the next Eddie Van Halen because they knew it wouldn't sell.. Thus killing Rock and Roll, but I think it can still be revived! Hopefully.

Nothing killed rock and roll. Rock just evolved into different forms. Some things people are forgetting.
1). MTV's viewership currently is at an all time low. TRL is officially having some episodes tapeds, not live anymore. Youtube and other internet sites are taking over and making more music accessible.
2). Rock is more split than ever before. The emo scene dominates mainly the teenage crowd, but what's dominating elsewhere? There are other scenes, especially the indie scene which is coming out strong.
Nothing killed rock. It's still there. Just got to look around.

Is Rock and Roll really dead? The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd...all of them are still selling like mad. Elvis, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry...all those do great when they get reissued. I think it's record companys in general and Disney's control of Billboard and radio stations that seems to produce the illusion that Rock and Roll is dead, but it's not. That's why record companys don't see much in sales and there's more downloading. It's the groups with no record deals that record companys ignored that are still out there playing Rock and Roll and showing it's still alive. Any idiot can get a drum machine and talk without singing and do that RnB crap, but it takes true artistic talent for real music. Hail Hail Rock and Roll!

this is alive and nicely actually. you won't be able to look to mainstream at present for skills; indie bands are the main suitable. Bands such by way of fact the White Stripes and The Strokes are credited to "saving rock & roll". verify them out. and multiple bands from previous an prolonged time are making great song today besides. Sonic toddlers, Radiohead, and Rush for occasion.......there's a extensive record. replace: yet they seem to be a great band. i assume you have a selective flavor in song or some thing.

Coheed & Cambria- Welcome Home (2005)
White Stripes- You dont know what love is....(2007)
Rush- The way the wind blows (2007)
Red Hot Chili Peppers- Torture Me (2006)
Muse- Assassin (2006)
Prince- Fury (2006)
Electric Six- Dance Epidemic (2005)
Coheed & Cambria - Willing Well IV: The Final Cut (2005)
Satellite Party- Kinky (2007)

There, solid proof that rock never died....it just took a while to come out of that drug and alcohol induced coma it fell into in the late 80s......

Rap and the ones that can't sing. Like Jessica Simpson, Hillary Duff, Lindsay Lohan.
Just about anyone can produce a record now a days if you have the money.
But I still think there are some good rock bands out there.
Nickelback is fairly new and they are good.
Bon Jovi has a new cd out...don't give up on the good ole stuff yet.

As saddening as it is to say- as harsh as it may be- it was a fad. Just like disco, Things come and go. Emo and Hip Hop Are peakin now, but by 2015, they'll be dead too.Ultimately, I assume it was that The Rock and Roll Purists were diminishing, but there are still loyal fans out there.

Hmm...Good Question. Could have been Nirvana or...
All of the make up and hairspray just gooped up the music or...
all the guys in the new bands are afraid of carpel tunnel or...
Vinnie Vincent faking (speeding) up his guitar solos.

The advent of punk and emo killed rock.
It was great in the 70s and ok in the 80s, and then came the "Hey, let's cut our wrists and write about suicide!!!" movement. And now, all "rock" is full of is overrated posers and sellouts.
That's why I recommend Christian rock. That's good stuff.
Check out "Savior" by Skillet for a good guitar solo. It was made in 2003.
