They use the moon to navigate. The man-made lights emulate the moon. That's why they fly in circles around the lights -- they keep passing it up.

It blinds them same with deer & head lights.
Small brains create little reasoning.

Less likely for bugs to head toward yellow lights which why that is popular bulb color for porch lights. Some still head for yellow lights but don't 'flock' towards it.

Ultra violet light component of the white light you're using. This is the main component of the moonlight they use. If you put an UV light out shining on a white sheet, you'll attract thousands.
