I volunteer time and money to the United Way. They support and provide funds very efficiently to many, many non-profits in local communities across the country. Something like 86% of each dollar goes directly into the local communities from which they're donated to help families and people in need.
Not many better I've found.

The Epilepsy Society. ( I have epilepsy. and I'm always doing my best to get rid of the stereotype of a person with epilepsy ( foaming at the mouth, shaking and shuddering) I get so furious when people make fun of seizure disorders. It's a disease- epileptics cannot control a seizure ( with the right medications they can) A friend of mine who had horrible seizures ( three seizures a day). He had an operation and the surgeon removed his left frontal lobe and he hasn't had a seizure for a year! I donate money and try to educate the public about it so they will understand that one can overcome epilepsy - with the right meds and even surgery.

Pies Descalsos, which is a charity Shakira founded to help stop poverty in Colombia. Because I have seen poverty here and it's heartbreaking.
Any of those child sponsorship things. Because those kids didn't do anything to deserve the situation they're in.
And stuff that helps stop human trafficking.

not only would i not give to any charity i would love to expose them all for what they are. Only about 20 percent of donations actually go to the need. Starvation is a tool used by those in control to continue controlling the population. In some countries if you send tons of food all that happens is the people have sex more and create more people and so the help is in vein many times. In nature animal populations are controlled by the food chain and food supply. When you take that out of the equation there is an imbalance.

I give to two on a regular basis:
The American Cancer Society and
The Alzheimers Association
I suppose we choose those organizations that represent things that mean a great deal to us.
