i want to put them just to the right of the start button. my school did it and it was convienent and i want to know how to do it.

ok but now how do i get more than three icons down there without having to press the two arrows?

Right-click on an empty spot of the taskbar and select Quick Launch.
Then, I personally, would not put the icon for the program on the taskbar -- rather, I would create a shortcut to the program and drag the shortcut onto the taskbar. You don't want to take any chance on accidentally deleting a program instead of a shortcut.
Sometimes you have to Alt+drag down.

Right click on the toolbar / left click on toolbars / click quick launch. Then drag in the icons you want there.
