Help with my neighbors and my kids- want to fight?
Mixed neighborhood- 12 houses on my cul de sac and we have 1 Mexican family, 1 Korean family, 1 Phillipino family, 1 Indian family, several kinds of caucasion and the newest addition 9 months ago was a black family. Our kids play together, go to school together, have sleep overs and ask innocent and intelligent questions of each other about our different cultures- it has been wonderful!
My problem is one of the families have kids that cry racism every time there is a disagreement. They have older kids that have verbally threatened my kids(and others on the street) and encourage the younger ones to fist fight when there is a disagreement. I've tried to talk to the parent but the parent doesn't seem too interested in what goes on with the kids on the street.
I've taught my kids to "take a break then talk it out" and most of the kids around here know this. They come to my door when there is a problem, but lately it has gotten very heated and divided. Any suggestions???

Frank- my extended family agrees with you! But we've lived here for 16 years and it just seems so sorrowful to have 1 family drive us out of the neighborhood.

The ones that are causing troubles...Watch them when they are together. Explain to the kid this. "Listen honey. Everyone gets mad sometimes and fist fighting is not the answer. Dont listen to your older brothers."
Keep an eye on them and when something happens, stop them, and try to explain?
That is my best guess.

Talk to the other parents of your community to see if you can stage an intervention meeting with the parents of those kids. Maybe get the local police officer who does DARE talks with the kids at school to meet with/ make a speech to the community during a block party about staying safe and settling things in a fair manner without violence--physical or verbal?

well just keep trying, but if it doesn't work then either try to avoid things that will bring up those problems, or just stay away from them. If the family doesn't want to work things out most likely the kids wont either. good luck.

SEPARATE your kids from the trouble makers, before it ends up with cops and every one in the court room. TIME to separate your self from the trouble makers.
