The cable wrapped around her ankles and literally sliced her feet off. I don't know if her feet went flying into the crowd or just dropped into the ride area though (nor do I want to really know).

I've been on the same type of ride before. You shoot up in the air about 150-200 feet and you slide straight back down the tower at about 55 mph.
The seat is like a chair because there is no place to put your feet. From the ground you can see people kicking their feet in the air. When the ride lands your feet are far enough from the ground that it shouldn't matter that there isn't any place to put your feet. The chair bounces up and down a bit (like a ball) before coming to a full stop. If a cable busts while high up in the air then that chair will come crashing down to the ground very fast. Her feet were likely tucked a little bit under the chair and that would explain the immediate amputation of both feet. They were severed from just above the ankles. I think it happened so quickly that she didn't even realize what was going on until it was too late. I've read other stories over the internet on the cable's tension over the girl's ankles??? I can't quite a mental picture of that and I'm already familiar with this ride. I'm sure we'll hear more about this story in the near future along with more specific details. Witnesses talk a lot about the swinging cable hitting other riders. The whole story will come out soon.

Mythbusters on TLC demonstrated the effects of a severed High-tension wire on the Human body well human analog/pig, but you get the idea, and on one attempt it dang near cut the pug in halg across the center, so taking out that poor girl's feet would have been no issue.
