Everyone's told you already the *behaviours* of a good listener. The *character* of a good listner is, simply, unselfish. Which is not to say this person does not consider him/herself or their role in what you are saying (chances are they may learn things about themselves by listening), but they hear what you say, they know it is not necessarily about them, they show they understand or ask questions so they will understand. Good listeners are hard to come by.

The worst listeners I have know in my life were those who had the least confidence in their personal convictions. They talk, talk, talk about what they think is "right" (they will even try to shout you down before you are finished talking( and don't even want to listen to your thoughts. Your thoughts threaten their shakey little beliefs. A good listener is confident in their core beliefs and is genuinely intersted in hearing yours. They are not threatened. They really are seeking to LEARN from what you have learned and respect you. A good listener TRULY LISTENS to you and waits until you are through. They have the intelligence and the patience and the self confidence to wait until you are through because they are going to absorb your thoughts, assimilate them and explain to you why they disagree with what they disagree on.

A good listener is someone who gives you their undivided attention, maintains eye contact if you're talking in person, and makes you feel they are genuinely interested in what you have to say, then responds in a way that communicates understanding of what you said, or asks question if they don't understand.

Someone who actively listens, with other words, someone who does not just nod and say yes, yes, yes, but also recognizes that they understand what the other person is trying to tell you without giving advice if not asked for it.

Being able to keep their mouth shut and ears open! Ask open ended questions when necessary, make eye contact and repeat pertinent points so the speaker knows you are paying attention.

Listening, pretty much. That and remembering, so many people forget what people say in a conversation. So listening, paying attention and remembering.

Most animals can hear better than we can...That's probably because they have bigger ears than we have. So I say.....big ears would be a sign of a good listener. Not floppy ears though...

a person who prefers to listen will let you do the talking, analyze your problems, stories, actions, react to them simply or ask more questions about what you have told them about yourself. Thay will let you continue a conversation about yourself and let you decide where it goes. Rarely will they talk about themselves and will wait till you ask them something about them. a good listener makes you their priority.
