No, it is not.

Common law marriage is recognized only in the following states:

Alabama
Colorado
District of Columbia
Georgia (if created before 1/1/97)
Idaho (if created before 1/1/96)
Iowa
Kansas
Montana
New Hampshire (for inheritance purposes only)
Ohio (if created before 10/10/91)
Oklahoma
Pennsylvania
Rhode Island
South Carolina
Texas
Utah


California stopped recognizing common law marriages in 1895.

The following states never permitted common-law marriage: Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Louisiana, Maryland, North Carolina, Oregon, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

California does not allow common law marriage to be established within its borders. However, it does recognize common law marriages established in states that allow for the establishment of common law marriage. States that allow common law marriages to be established w/ in it's borders: Alabama, Colorado, District of Columbia, Iowa, Kansas, Montana, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, Utah Common Law marriage is the same as regular marriage, but it has no formal paperwork.
