I want to get a farm some day and I want lots of animals. I really love ducks and want to have a pond with a family of ducks. Can a person have "pet ducks?" I realize they aren't a domesticated type of animal, but I would want them to stick around. Is there duck feed? Do you make shelter for ducks? Can you keep them around or will they fly away during the cold months?

I have 8 pet mallard ducks. They stay where the food is so i give them a good supply of cracked corn and calcium. They'll eat out of your hand if you befriend them when they're ducklings. I don't clip their wings so they can get away from predators if necessary. They have a plastic wading pond and when the ducklings are small, I make a ramp up to it - just a plank of wood. I've ony had two fly away in 8 years and I think they were spooked by something. They need a pen at night otherwise they will be dinner for raccoons or foxes or possums. They need to be kept in your yard and not able to get through a fence or gate.
You have to be prepared to be there every nighty to put them away when it gets dark or have someone do it and you have to clean the pond a lot.
They're fun and funny and you can sell the eggs if they don't want to sit on them.
You only need one, or at the most two, males with a harem of females. If you have more males, they fight and keep molesting the females.
Have fun! They're cute!

There are several breeds of domestic ducks and some are endangered. There is a waterfowl food; they need shade from the heat. They're usually not concerned with rain (and will go play in it) but a windbreak and shaded area is good. They're larger breeds so don't fly off...but will need protected from dogs.
Cayuga ducks are an American breed that is all black; Welsh Harlequin are beautiful ducks also as are Campbells. Ancona are pinto colored spotted ducks and there's several others too. Holderreads has many kinds of ducks including the rare breeds that are in need of conservation. Situations like you're talking about is ideal - their survival depends on small farms.

Well, I had 2 ducks (Charlotte and Elmer) when I was a kid. They weren't exactly tame, but they stayed around. We had a wading pool for them and they loved it. If I had to catch them, I could, without too much trouble.

The coolest thing was, sometimes I would sleep out in the back yard in a sleeping bag. I would wake up and both the ducks would be sleeping on my sleeping bag with me. Seriously! I couldn't pet them or play with them, but they obviously felt some connection and they seemed happy. And they ate aphids and other bugs off of our garden plants.

We were in California at the time, so I don't know what to tell you about cold weather and ducks. I'm sure there is some kind of shelter you could build for them to keep them warm. And yes, you can buy food for them.

I know of alot of farms that have pet ducks. You can buy them at the farms stores when they are ducklings. You can clip their wings to keep them from flying. And you can feed them laying mash, i believe. They live in just a normal old coop like the ones made for chickens. You can add a run on it so that they dont get away or you can just let them go free range (with clipped wings).

no im not an animal person. i dont have animals because i dont know how to take care of them well because im tooo busy in school and im scared they are gonna die. and you should not have a pet that needs a cage, because its Allah's creation, and it should be free. i had fishies before, but they are so hard to take care of. maybe because the tank was bigger than i could handle, and i hated cleaning the bowl. im okay with having fishes than to a hamster, because hamsters have to be caged up and fishes will die with out one. i hate snakes. i have snake/spider phobia EDIT: LOL.... "the most deadliest animal is a squirrel"... i remember one ran into my house a couple years ago at night, it was Eid, but since there was sooooo many people at my house, it got scared and ran away i am a big fan of kittens, and cats. no doggies. im am a fan of the cat family: tigers, lions, panthers, leopards, etc... but i wont have them as pets because ill turn end up being dinner

If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you should use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Go here https://tr.im/w4Roj
Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars.

Well, actually, there are domesticated ducks. You can buy them at a lot of farm stores or feed stores in rural communities. They are usually available in the spring, though I saw some today for sale when I bought bird feed. To have them stick around, I think you have to clip their wings. They are prey for animals like fox and weasels.
