they were designed and made much stronger and thicker than gas engines blocks, also they run at a very hgh temp, as they don't use spark plugs, wires, coil and a distributor.
They use Glow Plugs which needs 2 -100 Amp batteries to start the engine. The only items to change is the oil and filter, the gas filter and the air filter..But if one decided to use the engine block for a gas engine, one would only have to change out the intake and the heads. Glow plugs have smaller ports, than spark plug ports, You can blow a diesel engine if you don't maintain it. And the mileage is great compared to a gas engine. I had a 1982 diesel caddie that was getting 32 on the highway. Hope that answered your question!

All those reasons, plus diesel fuel is "greasier" than gasoline and also acts as a lubricant, reducing wear on the parts.

More durably built to handle the higher compression. Bigger oil supplies. Lower RPMs so pistons and bearings don't wear as much.

They are built stronger and more heavy duty. They have to withstand compression ratios of something lik 22-24 to 1.
