I put my twin girls (id) into their toddler beds when they were about 16mths old (14mths corrected). Only because they started to try and climb out of their cots.
Some words of advice though, if you have a chest of drawers in the room make sure it's secured to the wall or get locks for the drawers. My girls opened the drawers and tried to "climb" the chest of drawers and managed to pull them on top of themselves. One got a broken leg out of it the other just bruises.
Leave a box of toys you are happy for them to play with, I found once they were in the toddler beds they got up earlier at first as it was a novelty to be able to get in and out of bed themselves. I put a gate up across their door so they couldn't get into the other parts of the house and I could still hear them if they cried out. I had a box of quiet toys they could play with should one wake before the other.
Good luck and enjoy the twin ride

Start by simply taking the front panel off the crib. It makes an open bed the exact size of a toddler bed. If she climbs out all the time and it causes a problem, you can deal with it now before you're even pregnant with baby #2. Once she sleeps well in the crib made "like a big girl bed" you can set up the toddler bed, preferably in the room with the crib. Don't do it all at once if you can go easy on her. After an adjustment period... maybe just a couple of weeks... you can put the panel back on the crib making it inaccessible to her, and put her to bed only in the toddler bed. If you work this kind of a routine, you should have her switched over long before the new baby comes. If they'll be sharing a room, the crib will be all ready. If you'll be moving the crib, just do it after you have had many successful sleeps in the big girl bed if at all possible.

Whenever they seem ready. If they DO sleep in toddler beds and wake up in the middle of the night, are the going know to come get you, or are they going to go stick their finger in the light socket lol? I think it matters on the indivdual child. Also, if they're climbing out of their beds already, but you don't think they're ready for a toddler bed, onestepahead.com has a great mesh "tent" that goes over the top of the crib so they don't climb out (or fall out trying) and get hurt.
If it's any help, my daughter just turned 18 months and is now just in a toddler bed (and doing very well).

Best when they start to crawl out of them, but again they do make special tops that attach to the cribs to keep that from happening.. Thats when my girl will switch, I have the crib that turns from a crib to a toddler bed.

When our son was 14 months, we put him in a toddler bed. I'd rather see him fall off a low-bed, rather than way up & over the crib railings. Which is where he was heading!
We also put a baby gate at his door, but he always managed to climb that too! UGH!
Good luck!

i would wait, otherwise you are gonna have kids all over the house in the middle of the night!! Are the cribs on the lowest settings? Look into getting a crib tent, they attach to the top of the crib to keep adventurous babies from crawling out

Sharon P is exactly right! Take her advice! I JUST had to change my 21 month old into a toddler bed because we finally saw him climbing out, and his mattress is on the lowest setting. And it is quite a battle to get him to bed now. Do make sure your dressers have locks on them, my son also loves to try to climb them. And i invested in gates for his doors...otherwise i'd have to shut every door in this end of the house, and him running around is NOT a good idea.
I didn't know about the tent things...glad i read this. I might have to try one of those.
But if they can get out...now is the time! Better that then having them hurt themselves by falling out. But yeah, that does seem early! I bet you have your hands full!
Good luck!

you should switch to a toddler bed when your child can successfully crawl out of his/her crib. My baby brother switched to a toddler bed after he started crawling out of his crib and getting hurt in the process.

When they can craw out of their beds. My son is 14 months old and is still in his crib. He hasn't figured out that he can climb out yet. Thankfully.

If they can successfully get out of their crib on their own, then they need to go into a bed.
