I have plaid/checked dress shirts and striped ties that match in colors. What are the rules and etiquette concerning mixing checked shirts with striped ties?
I have heard and read conflicting opinions on this!

if 1 is striped or checked the other should b plain. in ur case keep the tie plain. leave the checked and stripe combo to the celebs and rock and rollers. they can get away with it without looking funny.

You'll look like a TV test-pattern if you intermix them.
My dress shirts are either solid colours or subtle stripes.
Ties should contrast, not match, with the shirt.
Solid with solid is OK, striped with solid is OK.
Never combine plaid, checked, or striped.
