I think it would be more astounding to think that we would be the only ones in the universe.

It is more astounding that we haven't even discovered all the species on this planet, let alone that we haven't even colonized the moon.
So far, we believe we are alone in the universe, but that just proves we have no concrete evidence of contact with other worlds.

If after several millions of years of history and Humans travelling out into the stars it turns out that we are alone - THAT would be truly astounding and sad

I think it would be much more astounding to think we ARE alone in the universe.Why would God create only us with makeing all of these planets and even other Solar Systems. For you that do not believe in God, how come we got swirled together and no-one else did ?

I believe there must be other life forms out there some where. But we have no idea what their lives are like, what they look like, where they are. We may never know. I think that's pretty astounding.
But to be all alone in never ending space? That's just frightening.
