To a certain extent I think so. Especially dogs. I have two dogs, one seems smarter than the other. But they both know what I'm talking about when I say "who wants cookies?"
I think our domestic pets understand some of what we say, but more likely respond to our tone of voice and body language. When we are happy and excited, they can sense it and seem happy with us!

Oh yes they can. I have a Mainecoon cat that can understand the human language pretty good. Too bad hes a pothead cat.
