I would say humility (being humble) and sincerity (being open, truthful). There are different types of prayer -- for repentance and forgiveness, for healing and comfort or strength and wisdom, for oneself or others, for thanks and receiving grace.

All these involve humbling oneself, and preparing to receive what is God's will or for the greater good -- not wishing or imposing one's own will onto a situation or onto others.

Note: For prayers of deliverance, which are commands of authority, these are different from the above. The best book that explains this in the most clear way is "Healing" by Francis MacNutt. I recommend it to both Christian and nonchristians to understand the process healing and prayer. It is a really good resource!

Of course you should be serious. There are many different things you can pray about; consider that you are talking to God and probably should not be frivolous. Yes, it is always appropriate to thank God for the many ways that he has and continues to bless you and your life in general.
