As far as not having alot of employment available and a high percentage of low income residence?

I live in the Appalachians Mountains in Southern VA and I was told by someone recently who doesn't live here but familiar with it that it was in the top 5 of economically suppressed regions/areas in the US.

is a interactive map that lets you look at variables like income and unemployment for the whole country or at areas as small as census tracks.
Southern Virginia is not as well off as the rest of the state but their are a lot of places poorer.

I have been in some Appalachian regions where the people have no electricity or running water. That was 30 years ago and I doubt it is still that way today.

I would think that the most economically depressed areas of the U.S. would all be on Indian reservations. A couple of years ago I was on a Sioux reservation in South Dakota. It was really, really sad.

I am not surprised about the Appalachian region. Regions where employment requires manual labor are hard it with difficult jobs and low wages. There are many much regions in the south as well.
