Was there ever a time the universe didn't exist? If so, what exactly would be "nothingness"? If not, how is that possible? If it involves a God, who/what created God?

Why not?
the laws of the universe according to Einstein suggest that matter cannot be created nor can it be destroyed so if this is mathematically true then the universe always has been ....

The bang created both space and time, so it does not really make sense to ask what was happening before time began. As far as this universe is concerned, it had a definite beginning and nothing was happening here before it began, because there was no here for anything to be happening in. Nothingness is a tricky idea, because it always tries to present itself and, of course, it cannot. If it does it instantly becomes a something and then you get to ask what it is! Just as remarkable, if not more so, is the fact that a piece of that bang is asking about it and another piece of that bang is replying. Kind of like two drops of water from a spilled glass discussing how remarkable the trip from the table to the floor is!

If the universe is absurd, we should never have discovered the fact.

The question "Why" is too often taken to be a "How" question so you are likely to get etiological answers that describe causes and events in the past. The question "Why" asks for a teleological answer that describes intents and purposes in the future. To address your question I can only suggest that you consider just exactly what it is you mean when you use the word "Exist" To my way of thinking the concept of existence is just that and it may actually be appropriate to say that therefore the Universe does not "Exist" But this is probably a much deeper subject than you were prepared for. If not feel free to join my group and post some speculations.

Scientist believe they have traced the origins of the universe to the "Big Bang." All matter and energy was compacted in a gigantic mass billions of years ago. Then for some reason, the mass exploded, creating the known universe. When we peer into the night sky with our telescopes, the further we see out into space the further back in time we are looking.
I happen to believe in a God who spoke the universe into existance. As far as the origins of God, I have asked Pastors this same question and the response I get is "God has always been." I'm not totally satisfied with that answer, but as a Christian, some things have to be taken on faith.

God wasn't created. He was always there. He has no beginning and so He has no end. I know this is a simple explanation and so it is hard to understand. If I could simplify it further it might help. Think of God as a circle (draw a circle if you want it might help). Now, if you have drawn the circle. Look at it. You will find that a circle has no beginning and has no end. The same is true for God. In the beginning He created the universe. And so, yes, there was a time the universe never existed and, no, no one created God. If your wondering about nothingness, look up into space. That's what nothingness is - empty space. There are a few atoms but very widely spaced out though.
As to why the universe exists? The answer is love! It is the greatest of all things. God was there before the beginning, and He thought about creating man. He thought about "you". The bible is pretty cool, it says that He made the earth, the land, the air, animals, and food. After He set everything up He made man. Imagine if he made man before he made food and air to breathe. That would be kind of cruel to make man before air wouldn't it. So, the earth was made. He made the universe for all His creations. That includes you. He wanted His creation to love Him back and that's why He gave us free will. You can't force someone to love you. It's something that is freely given. If you try to force it out of someone it's no longer love. Wouldn't be nice if everyone loved one another - unconditionally, regardless of race or religion or opinion? Well, I have to go. Love you guys at yahoo answers. It's a nice place to talk to people. "Like..... peace man!!

The universe that we know, came into existance with the Big Bang; according to one set of scientific theories.
Scientists can back-track the explosion to a single point.
But that is a few milliseconds after the actual start.
We cannot determine what happened just before that.
Some suggest that another universe collapsed to a point.
Still others claim that there are simultaneous universes.
We just can't see each other, in this physical body.
So something always existed, maybe we find out after death.

The universe exists just so people like you will be able to come to Yahoo Answers and ask questions about it. As for who created God, the church created God to make sure people tithed. Pax - C

The start of this Universe is the end of a previous one.
We don't need a god to explain the Universe.

The circle of life is the same in the micro and the macro Universe.

I don't know! I do know there is no such thing as nothing! If you ever succeed in finding nothing you will soon realize there is something. That something will be you and you will be God and have to create a universe out of nothing to keep from going mad from loneliness!

Because it can. At some point, it probably didn't exist. Nothingness is the same as dimension without occupation.
