The sitch is:
I'm 47, single, no kids, tired of job and the American grind, and would like to travel some and see different places before I get too old.
But the housing market is a bit low, and if I stay even five more years my house will be worth more, I'll still be sort of young, and I might not have to come back and work for another 5 or 10 years to retire. I could then move to Costa Rica or wherever and stay.

stay and save. Its hard to explain a long period of unemployment, even if it is legit. Ask any stay at home mom who decides to go back when the kids are in school

That question requires some soul searching on your part. If you are really fed up with the situation you are in, doing nothing will only make it worse. If an opportunity is presenting itself to you , perhaps now is the time to make a move. If money and security is of the up most importance, then just suck it up for five more years. The problem with that is life is about changes and the opening may not come again.

I'm very practical, sometimes too much and I'm trying to shake that, so I'd say....If you have enough equity, you could do that with half or so, and put the other have in a money market account for when you have to come back and realize you are now homeless and have to find a job.....see there's that "practical" thing sneaking up and sucking the fun out of everything AGAIN!!!!
