This sounds like symptoms of bad spark plugs... get a good set they are not expensive, even for the best ones. I recommend Bosch Platinum +4. About $5 each from Autozone or Advance Auto Parts.
Takes about 15 minutes to replace if you have the right tools.
Edit: In my experience, these plugs do not "overkill" (@$5, an "overkill", you kidding me?) or "bog the car down"... I'm not even sure how these two things can happen at the same time! Have had great experience using these on all 3 of my BMWs.

Sounds like a few possibilities:
spark plugs is a good place to start, but don't get the Bosch + 4, they're over kill for this car, go with NGK, lot less expensive and will perform much better. The Bosch will bog the car down.
O2 sensor is another possibility and also check your air filter.
Lastly, could be a fuel pump starting to struggle and about to die.

How clean is your air filter? You may also want to check your timing
