Populations evolve.

Individuals do NOT evolve. Evolution is the process of a change in allele frequency for a population. This may lead to changes in physiology or behavior of the individuals. All an individual can do is to adapt to a new environment, say by learning to hunt during the cooler parts of the day.

All of the other options - genera, kingdoms and phyla - are made up of more than one species. Evolution applies only to a species, not an entire group. Different species may evolve new traits in response to another species' new traits, but two different species do not evolve simultaneously.

Populations are just different groupings of a particular species. You can talk about the dog population on 1st street, and the dog population in the animal shelter. They're the same species, but they live in different places. It's more correct to say that a population, rather than a species, evolves, since a population can actually evolve into a new species different from its parent species.

Populations. Individuals never evolve...one could argue that a genus, kingdom or phyla could evolve....but the best answer is population.

I see every one rightly excepted individuals from evolving, but did not tell you what they " do ". Populations evolve and individuals are selected. ( even though some of my respected colleges may think selection works at " higher " levels )
