We just bought the baby a second crib to put in our room. We had the first one put together at the store but that cost to much so we decided to get someone we knew to put it together. My brother claimed he knew what he was doing so we let him put it together but he is such a ding bat. I am a little scared to put my daughter in the crib. Is there anyway that I can test it?

babysit the neighbour's kid? Just kidding.

Cribs are pretty straightforward to put together. As long as the 4 "walls" seem square and don't rock back and forth or show gaps at the seams, and the bottom is level and is attached at all 4 corners you should be ok. That being said I would still be taking a screw driver and making sure everything is tight. Then pile about 30 pounds of weight into it and move the crib around. If it doesn't fall apart then you can breathe a bit easier.

Or con someone you know who is handy with this sort of stuff to check it out.

I helped put 2 cribs together for a girlfriend that had twins and as fas as I remember it was easy and they never fell apart.

To test it its safe place some groceries in a bag (Cans, bags of flour etc) to the upper weight that you would expect the little one to grow to be, and then add some, and gently bounce them in the cot. That should tell if the base is firm enough. Then gentle shake the cot from each side and end, and if there is a lot of movement between the panels, then either tighten further or start again.
If there is a drop side, make sure it moves easily up and down, and that the locks engage properly. Give it a little shake in the locked position to make sure.
You are right to check that everything is safe for the little one, you do want to get it right the first time.

You have no more guarantee if the store assembles it.
I presume you checked for the UL or CSA sticker on it.
They have done extensive testing of the designs.
They should come with pretty good instructions.
Check the diagrams against the crib itself.
Make sure he used up all the parts.

Try putting something the same weight in and put some pressure and shake it a lil bit

Go on line to consumer reports and that should be able to help you with product reviews.
