Because our system was designed to be based on laws and not morals. Everyone's morals are different and the idea was that being found legally guilty of something did not equal eternal damnation.

The People like this system. They must, they keep re electing the same people that wrote the laws.

The reason I think they like it is because they figure O.J. Simpson getting off for murder is a small price to pay for the certainty that they won't do hard time themselves for DUI.
