Really, there is no particular background for a chemist to come from. He or she must have studied a lot of math and some other sciences as well as chemistry. It is more than just accumulating a bunch of facts, it is a way of thinking, knowing how to use the Scientific Method, how not to jump to conclusions, how to design experiments to test ideas. The scientific world communicates with each other through carefully-made scientific journals, in the hope that if something useful is discovered, every other scientist concerned with it will find out.
