The problem with San Diego airport is that it is fit into a rather small space just north of the harbor. Parking near the terminals is small, bathrooms are small, access to the gates is quick because there's not much room between the gates and counters. With this space issue in mind you will not find very good places to eat. Terminal one has a small food court area with McD's, Starbucks, Boudin's Bread, Chicago UNO pizza, Rubio's and another Mexican place that just doesn't feel like a restaurant. There are more places upstairs past security (Starbucks, bar, etc). Terminal two has a California Pizza Kitchen, Naked Juice (cash only!), McD's, Starbucks, a Karl Strauss minibar and another little snackplace and bar at the end. The other part of terminal 2 includes another McD's, Cinnabon, La Salsa and Submarina (sandwiches and salads are good). Those last 2 aren't too bad price-wise and taste/health wise are OK. Past security is a Nathan's (yuck) and a Pizza Hut Express. Another sort of restaurant but again very smallish. At the end, another Starbucks. Other than that all are rather overpriced, and not very healthy. The only thing I'd recommend are the salads at CPK but they're about $8 + tax. What can you expect from an airport?

I have found them to be very expensive and not all that good. Most of the food is somewhere between 25% to 50% more than you would find outside without as many choices. There is not good resturant in the airport, just a bunch of fast food or average chains.
I've been to a lot of airports and San Diego is one of the worse food wise. It's ok if you just want to fill up, but otherwise you can do better bringing from home.

They really aren't very expensive--you can get good mexican food there for less than 8$, and some of the food is a bit fast and oily but there are really cool and cheap clubs, bars, and basic San Diegan places to munch in...basically like outside of the airport, same restaurants.

Boxjelly's answer is very good. Like him/her, I've been at that airport more times over many years than I'd care to remember, and there is absolutely no reason to eat there on purpose...only eat there if it's that place or starve. Since so many airlines no longer serve food on flights, airports are ending up being a source for carry-on food, and Lindberg Field's choices are awful. Only thing I can say is, Lindberg Field use to be even worse, if you can imagine! However, they use to have a general cafeteria style restaurant which while not good was better than what's there now, and that was turned into a fast food mall type experience. Would be nice if they turned one of their stall's over to a manufacturer of quality takeaboard meal vendors...like anyone's going to listen to my ideas....

You pay two times more for everything. I say eat before you go, are take food with you. I know this because I live in San Diego.

It might not be walking distance but the airport is really close to downtown and Pt Loma and can take the bus there and back and get a decent meal, as long as it's not during peak traffic hours. It's easier to get in and out of there than most airports.
