Use a lubricant like K-Y on the tip to make insertion easier. It's okay to put it in before you start bleeding, as long as you don't forget it. However, if you are dry it will be harder to insert, and probably painful to remove. Use a lubricant if this ever happens.
Make sure it is all the way inside you, but you don't have to ram it up there ridiculously far. Put your finger in, to get a feel for the angle of your vagina, and aim it in that direction.
Once you get used to them, they are SO much more comfortable than pads.
Yes, it's completely safe to go swimming with a tampon. It's one of the most wonderful advantages.
Use something with a biodegradable applicator, like Tampax (not pearl). The thought of all those plastic applicators in our landfills forever makes me ill. Once you learn to use them, they are just as easy and comfortable as plastic. (Remember, use a little lubricant if you have trouble.)

I used tampons all of the time, because I hated wearing the napkins. It probably felt horrible because you weren't bleeding, which would have made it difficult to get it into the right position.
It's safe to wear a tampon in the pool. It will keep the blood from leaking out until it gets full of blood and you will have to change it. So I would put in a new one before swimming if you'll worry about it. I always used Kotex with the plastic applicator, because they were easier for me. They give the directions on the box on how to insert them properly. Can you ask you mom or a female relative if you need help? The medical people say to not keep them in longer than 8 hours, but I did and I never had any problems.
Good luck. You can email me and I can help you further if you want.

Tampons are easier to insert once you have started. Also some brands have an applicator that makes it easier than others. And yes, it is perfectly safe to go swimming with it, as long as you regularly change it every four hours or so, and no blood will leak out. I used to use Tampax because their applicator was made out of paper and could be flushed. I don't know how old you are, but if you're very young, say under 14 or so, you may have to wait a year or two to wear them comfortably.

Tampons are much more comfortable when your actually 'flowing' and if it seems uncomfortable, it usually means that its not in all the way. Yea its safe to go swimming with a tampon in as long as your flow isn't super heavy, just make sure you change tampons before getting in the water. A lot of people say A Tampax Pearl is the best but there not. Pearl only opens horizontally and it doesn't give you maximum protection. Playtex Gentle Glide is the best. it opens like an umbrella, just upside down, and they are plastic also for easy insert.

Yes, you should wait until your period starts. You can use a little bit of lubricant (KY or another water-based "personal" lubricant) if it's easier, but if you're flowing you shouldn't need it.
Yes, you can go swimming worry free (I was on the swim team in high school and never had a worry.) You should change your tampon shortly after getting out of the pool, though. You won't leak unless you're not using the right size tampon for your flow.
I've always used Tampax. I like cardboard applicators because they're flushable and biodegradable, but you might find plastic applicators easier to insert.

When you notice that you have started your period you should then insert the tampon. It is very safe to go swimming with a tampon, as a matter of fact it is better to use a tampon to swim with then a pad. As for a recommended brand, it really depends on you and your body type, you may have to experiment with several brands before you find the right one. A word of caution, make sure you read the insert (little paper that comes in the tampon box) about T.S.S and understand it. It is actually very rare for someone to get T.S.S but the chances for it go up when you use a larger sized tampon and if you don't change them properly. Good Luck and happy swimming!!

1. Sometimes it is more comfortable to wait until you have already started your period so your vagina isn't dry. However, some women need a little bit of lubricant, such as Ky Jelly, to make insertion easier.
2. Do NOT go swimming during a period. Tampons will only absorb the swimming water and then the germs and bacteria in the water would be held inside your vagina and can cause infections. Also, your blood will only pollute the pool with your germs.
The only alternative is to skinny dip in a lake, where your blood wouldn't matter to the water and your blood won't seep through a bathing suit.
3. I prefer O.B. tampons. Most other brands are designed longer for heavier periods. These expand width-wise to absorb more. They are also without applicators, which can scratch your insides upon insertion and make more garbage.

Yes. You should wait until the blood has started. The flow will definitely help go in/out more smoothly. You could even put a little vaseline on the tip to help you out.
It is safe to go swimming with it in. My gym teacher told me that once you get in the water, your period stops.
I recomend Tampax pearl. It is super expensive so you could get the Walgreens brand. Good Luck.

The best in PEARL, first you don't use any tampon without being on your period first, use panyliners or a pad if you know you are close, whatever your flow use that size tampon don't go bigger, Safe to go swimming usually but depending on your flow and when you last changed.. Good Luck Hunny
