1.) You can have both on your computer, but you must choose which will be the "default" (favourite). They check they're the "favourite" each time they start, so if you flip-flop between them they'll bug you. You can turn off the "Ask to be default" in their settings.
2.) While you can "remove" Internet Explorer in the Add / Remove Windows Components, it doesn't actually remove the program - it takes all the file associations away.
Aka a very long time-out (bad IE! bad!) *laughs*
If you find a site that insists that you use Internet Explorer (Myspace, etc), you can get an add-on that uses IE's coding to display the page, but it keeps the page in a Firefox tab.
IEtab - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419
Another add-on I highly recommend is Adblock Plus - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1865/
It blocks ads - banner ads, flash ads, etc.
If you're like me you have a scroll mouse - did you know middle-clicking (scroll clicking) on a link opens it in a new tab? And middle-clicking on a tab closes it?
Isn't that cool?!

Internet explorer is an extension of windows explorer and part of the windows operating system that makes windows function, as it does. I would suggest only removing the icons so you are not using them.
You can run Firefox, Netscape, Sea Monkey or any other web browser you want to that works with windows. You're not stuck with just Internet Explorer.

Micro$oft has made it difficult to remove internet explorer without causing major problems to your OS.
But, it is under the "Add Remove Windows Components" portion of your add / remove programs.

I would just leave IE alone, delete the shortcuts etc, but windows does not like IE not to be there,,,,,especially for updates etc.
