I have a seeping head gasket, car runs great, lifters to me could use adjustment ??
My mechanic BMW specialist$$$$ is telling me I need head gasket replaced & while in there I should also replace timing belt, water pump, rocker arms & cam. I am just looking for a couple more knowledgeable opinions.
Could this new valve job be too much pressure & blow my bottom end out? I've heard in the the past that it's not a good idea.

It is good idea to address the head gasket issue ASAP. Also take the cylinder head to the machine shop and get it pressure tested, get a valve job, and mill. The service takes about $400. Replace the belt and water pump while you are in there.

Your engine should not have problem with the bottom end blowing out problem. If it does happen, that usually means your engine is warn out so bad that you also needed a bottom end rebuild. These M20 eta engines are known to last up to 400,000 miles when taken care of. Problem like that should not happen at 160K unless the engine is badly neglected.

It is a good idea to replace the timing belt and water pump as the job is mostly labor and since you are that far into the engine just add the parts as the labor is free. The cam and lifters should only be replaced if they show excessive wear, which is unlikely. Unless you want to have a hotter camshaft then now is the time as the head would have to come off to install a camshaft anyway.

I have gotten a $2000 dollar estimate for a valve job on my car. Ouch ! ! !

A completely rebuilt cylinder head which would include valve guides, springs, and replacement of any parts which show wear. The cylinder head most definitely should be checked for flatness and re-machined if necessary. These steps have absolutely no effect on future perceived damage to the bottom end in any way.

If you plan to keep your car get the work done. 168,000 miles isn't much at all considering the quality of the car.

Change out your head gasket, and timing belt and maybe the water pump. But I recommend you do some research beforehand to see if other similar models have any water pump issue, it's not really an expensive item (at least for the E36/46 3-series), and some older pumps with plastic impellers tend to fail prematurely on certain BMWs models. But I wouldn't touch the other items other than maybe some adjustment.

no its a good idea eventually that head gasget will blow i went through the same problem and when it does it will warp the head sometimes beyond repair, do it while you have time or it will cost 3 times that in the end, if its diesel id leave the lifters alone bout def the timing belt and water pump
