I do myself, but in a lot of other threads I see people that think its a dumb name and "why do you name your team after a color?"....very frustrating :)

On a related matter, who knows what the Harvard and Stanford mascots are?

I said the MASCOTS of the Harvard and Stanford team....the Harvard mascot is actually John Harvard :) The team is just called the Crimson. Conversely, the Stanford mascot is the Cardinal - ie, the color Cardinal Red, not the bird, so anyone that calls them the Stanford Cardinals you can call an idiot ;)

The Cleveland Browns were founded in 1946 under owner Arthur 'Mickey' McBride. A fan contest was conducted to determine the name of the team, with the most popular choice being "Panthers." However, Coach Paul Brown objected to the name as there was a semipro team using it already. A second contest was held, and the name "Browns" was selected. The coach was uncomfortable with the idea of having the team named after him, but stated publicly that the new team was named after boxing champion Joe Louis, who was known as the "Brown Bomber".

The Browns are named after Paul Brown, who was their first coach (and founded the Cincinnati Bengals). I wish I could give as good an answer for the Harvard Crimson and the Stanford Cardinal.

The Browns are named after founder Paul Brown...On the other questions, its the Harvard Crimson and the Stanford Cardinal

Paul Brown one of the original coaches and found of the team when they were in the All America Football Conference in the the 1940s and 1950s.
Now the real Browns are the Baltimore Ravens. They were the Browns that left Cleveland in the late 1990s. But could not take the franchise name.
This new Browns is only a new team that started a few years back.

I thought like the others it was the name given in honor of Paul Brown. My husband who is from Cleveland, says this is not true, although he can't remember the story. I would like to know myself so I am answering it so I can look the question back up later under my answers and see if anyone else knows. I do know that Paul Brown founded the Bengals, not the Browns. He coached the Browns.

Update Response: I did not even try to answer that mascot portion of your question, but I applaud those who did. You are rude to label those who did not provide the answer to a question you already knew the answer to as "idiots".

Actually, it is Stanford Cardinal (not plural). Harvard is the Crimson.

WELL, I KNOW ITS LATE BUT, IT WAS NAMED AFTER PAUL BROWN. AS FOR THE COLORS, PAUL BROWN HAD ANOTHER TEAM IN COLLAGE, THE BOWLING GREEN FALCONS, WHO HAD THEIR COLORS BEFORE THE BROWNS, HE WANTED THE SAME COLOS AND THERE U HAVE IT. IN MY OPINION THEY SHOULD CHANGE THIER NAME EITHER TO THE CLEVELAND "ART MODEL CAN SUCK MY DICK UNTIL IT TURNS" BROWNS
