You don't have enough air flow to the evaporator. Change the filter and clean the evaporator coil. Check the indoor blower and ensure that it is running at high speed.
If this does not work, you will need to contact a pro.

The best thing to do is keep up w/ maintenance. Change the filter regularly and have a professional service the unit once or twice per year. A service tech can often tell you about and fix potential problems before they happen. In the mean time, if it freezes turn the unit off and let it thaw and dry completely before using it again).

P.S. don't let the previous answer scare you about R-22 price skyrocketing after 2010. It is true it will no longer be produced (but it can still be used as long as it was made b4 2010). MILLIONS of homes & businesses in USA use R-22. It is already being stockpiled. There will still be plently of supply to meet demand after 2010. I've had this happen when there was to much humidity in the house and when the doors were left open to air out paint fumes. I had to shut off the unit or put it on fan and wait for the coils to defrost then start it up again. The other thing that may be wrong is that you need to add freon. It requires a special gage and access to the type of freon your unit uses. As in cars, some types are not available or only available to those with a special liscnce to handle it. Also check the filters. They may be plugged up with dust / hair. If so, change them. I have indoor big dogs and cat, so have to change mine monthly at worst or quarterly at best. I suggest you call an AC service man and have your unit serviced. They will probably change filter as part of that and tell you if you need freon.
Good Luck

you need to clean it and change the filters but you should also have it checked to see if it is low on freon. Sometimes when they get low they will freeze up.

You don't have enough freon and you don't have enough freon because you have a leak. Call a technician. You also might want to stop running it because if you loose all of your freon your compressor can lock up costing more big $$$.
