I tend to become a little irritated when I hear people say to someone, whether it be online or in the real world, 'get a life.'

Is it society that determines what a life should be? Is there someplace we vote on what are the acceptable standards for living?

If someone is happy living as a hobbit, I say let them. Some of the greatest artists and composers of all time,. whether it be from an actually social disorder, or by choice, had little social contact with the public at all, they lived through their art, and they lived well.

This especially perturbs me as the norm for college aged kids is to spend their free time as mindless zombies getting wasted.

I'm a musician, and I spend most of my time with my art. I don't relate to many of my peers, but I do go out for the occasional social occasion with those I do hold deer to me, though living through my deepest hours of depression I can understand those who can not.

What are your insights, should anyone be able to judge a life?

the only life you can actually judge, is your own. But being human, and not likely to look to deeply into our own failings and foibles, many tend to lend their judgement of others to them.....it's easier, and you will always find a vast majority of people taking the easy road, right straight to stagnation.
That being said, surely you can agree that there are those that do not live to their full potential....that by failing to do so, they even drag many down into stagnation with them....is it not a responsible thing to do to point that out when it is noticed? Not necessarily judge their actions so much as point out that they might wish to consider a different route? I am asking because I am not sure, but it feels right to think so.

Having a life is knowing you exist.

But I know what you mean. But when you talked about the college kids getting wasted....that's how they want to live their life! Who gets to determine how to live a live? You.
