Look at America's actions and what empires do;

1) Empires forcefully ensure foreign nations employ friendly policies to their own country to exploit political, economically or military bias. (Vietnam, Cambodia, Iraq and countless others living under America's shadow)

2) Empires use any reason to try and effectively police any anti-leader in a similar way to the Gestapo (Bush's guise of decreasing privacy, more watch on the public)

3) Emperor's will let others take all the blame for a policy they stuck to (Why is there no independent inquiry into Bush's fake evidence in regard to the Iraq war?)

4) Emperor's are never held accountable for corruption (Think of Bush's first election, you can smell the corruption all the way across the solar system)

Compare the US system with Imperial Britain or Greece. It is similar. Dont think that democracy cannot be imperialistic since looking at these two empires you can see it can.

What do you think?

The US of A does not have the strategic intelligence to come anywhere close to becoming an Empire.

A more appropriate legacy would be that of a tyrannical nation, the 'bully boys' of the modern world!

When must a Democracy behave like an Empire.Lets have a history lesson.Athens was the first democracy. But they always had a problem with not dealing with threats early. They were destroyed by Sparta,a ruthless dictatorship.Athens had a navy and was more technologically advanced. They should have been able to beat the Spartans, they had their chance and didn't take it and payed dearly for it.Now lets move to Rome,it was a Republic before it became an Empire, not exactly a democracy but the closest example we can get to one.Anyway, when the Romans first fought Carthage they won and then they let them be for the most part.I imagine they had to pay reparations of some sort.During the second Punic war Carthage came at Rome with more force than ever, the Romans almost lost that war but they beat them back and punished them again.By the time the third punic war came around the Romans had enough,it was clear that Carthage would never learn. So the Romans went in,destroyed Carthage, rebuilt it to Roman standards and secured their country unlike the Athenians. Now lets Look at today. If we were to send millions of troops into Iraq and crawl all over the place like cockroaches, raise an American flag, make it a 51st State give them the freedoms we have and they start making the same kind of living we are,as in being able to put food in their kids stomach's then they'll think differently because money taks and Bull s*** walks. So sometimes behaving like an Empire is what needs to be done,no matter how cruel it is.

I don't think we can be labelled as an empire but yes you can relate the U.S. to actions of an empire. The US is often related to the Roman Empire for many good reasons. But we are also in an age where we can look back at anctient empires and learn from there mistakes. About imperilasim, it's been done since the dawn of mankind. Socialist countries did it, communist countries did it and yes democratic countries do it. But we do it for good reasons (or at least try to). It's a very doog question. We'll have to see in the next 100 years to find the answer.

Please don't group ALL Americans as having the same ideals. Honestly I wish someone would assassinate Bush. I think we need to protect our borders of course- who doesn't want that. I wish that we could send all the muslims back to their own places of origin, and anyone illegal. I feel like they are here implanting themselves in our soil waiting for their signal to kill us all. They can live a good life elsewhere if they wanted to. So many of us here want to only worry about us here, and nothing else abroad, but what can we do? The majority of Americans know Bush is the President by default, and we are all hoping the rest of his term is speedy. My hubby is deployed, and will be again before Satan gets out of office. I miss him like crazy, and it's not like he wants to be there anyway. My friend moved to Japan a while back and he is so sad at where we're headed. American people as a whole shouldn't be held completely accountable for our Gov't's mistakes. We don't always have much say in any matter anyhow... Plus when we elect them they always seem so genuine, but end up corrupt. God Save Us!!!

Well judging that the USA is just one country, and an empire needs at least, oh, i don't know, about 10, then i would say no. And i would advise against trying to take another country, unless you wanted another war (and seriously, another war that was america's fauly may just piss off russia enough to kill you all, as it has been threatening for the last few decades).

And seriously, you need to learn some history, because America is nothing like Imperial Britain.(For one, you wouldn't be in america if it wasn't for imperial britain).

To become an Empire the U.S.A would have to have an Emperor or Empress as head of state, I don't think that is ever likely to happen. To be or not to be an Empire is not a political choice, but the result of history and having a Royal Family.

Your analogy of "empire" is flawed. Just look at your two examples of the British and Greek empires. Empire means to control/subjugate contries beyond your "kingdom". The U.S. does not fit that description. Sure, we're at war in Iraq, which is a fiasco, but that doesn't qualify as empire building. In fact, we made sure Iraq has its own government.

Your examples of what an empire does are not accurate. Empires don't force foreign nations to comply or agree, they conquer them and make them part of the empire. The Romans are the best example.

So, whatever Bush's government is, it is not an empire.

i think america are already implying their own Hegemonic rule, and in the worst possible way, Kiplings white mans burden was written for america at the start of british de-colonization in 100 years america will be borderline bankrupt

"Those who dont learn from history are destined to repeat it"

not a popular theory (and im not saying i agree with it ) but some say america is on a crusade against islam

I think Bush already think he is an emperor, but to see him in action the only emperor he reminds me of is the penguin type.
