It doesn't hurt to have a filter, but you want to be careful that the current isn't too strong for your fish. Male bettas' fins don't allow them to swim in strong current, so I would suggest turning the flow rate down (there should be a knob at the top of the intake to adjust the flow) if you have two males or putting it on the side with the female if you have one of each.

Ok...so you know...I own a book on Betta's and we have 15 males and have owned them over two years now! Ok...Betta's don't require filters...nice! Easy to care for because they are labyrinth fish. They breath by taking air from the top of the tank and then drop and release it through their gills. So no filter required unless...you add regular fish. Gill breathing fish! Do make sure you clean the tank every few weeks to keep them active, looking good, and remove the waste. Don't over feed...about one grain a day. Betta's can live up to nine years if you don't kill them with fat buildup from overfeeding.

I think you should. A 15 gallon tank isn't the kind of tank you want to be doing changes on every two weeks. Just make sure the water current isn't too high; a sponge filter, undergravel filter or corner filter should do the trick.

is that a 15 or a 1.5? if you have a 15 gallon with 2 bettas then i would strongly suggest a filter. you don't even need a very good one. it will keep you from having to clean the tank weekly though. lazy is good sometimes.

Cleaning a 15 gallon tank will be very hard, so it would help, but Bettas don't need filters.

absolutely. bettas, like all other fish, require tanks (NOT bowls) with heaters and filters. even though they are air breathers, the water they live in needs to be cleaned. imagine if someone put you in a tiny room, and the food you didnt eat went all over the floor and you went to the bathroom all over the floor and it was never cleaned. and it wasnt heated. youd live, but youd be miserable.
same goes for fish. they need a well kept environment in order to stay healthy
