On the current secular calendar, the Summer Solstice is the first day of summer.
In older times, stemming from Pagan times, it was thought to be the middle of Summer-- hence the term "mid-summer," as in Shakespeare's "Midsummer Night's Dream." It was seen as the zeineth of the Sun's journey through the year, it would build up to the longest day and then begin it's decline.
So, neither of you are really off-base.

The summer solstice is an astronomical term regarding the position of the Sun in relation to the celestial equator. The summer solstice is the date with the longest daylight period and hence with the shortest night. This date usually falls on June 21/June 22 (in the Northern hemisphere) or December 21/December 22 (in the Southern hemisphere).
