The reason is because of the late Cory Lidle. Cory Lidle played 1/2 the 2006 s4eason for the yankees and dies in plane crash in October, five days after the yankees were eliminated from the playoffs by the Detroit Tigers.

The black stripe on the the Yankees' sleeve is to commemorate Cory Lidle, the Yankees' pitcher who died when his plane crashed into a building. His death was last year, days after the Yankees' season had ended, so the Yankees are wearing it this year.

They either do that or have a number on their sleeve when a current player or former player dies. In 1995, they honored Mickey Mantle with a 7 on their sleeve, Joe Dimaggio with 5 in 1999, and Cory Lidle this year with the black stripe.
