Flies are insects from the order diptera. There are over 240,000 species of flies, and under half of them have been cataloged sufficiently.

The largest known fly is Gauromydas heros (Latin), commonly referred to as a Mydas hero. It is from the family of flies known as Midas flies, many of which are also very large.

I would suspect you saw a cicada. They're very big, very odd-looking and extremely noisy buzzers when they fly. They've given me quite a start more than once when taking off suddenly next to my head.
