"Tell that to the families of those that died in the World Trade Center" is one of the lowest forms of appeal to emotion and identity politics imaginable. I find it hard to believe that every person directly affected by the WTC tragedy has the exact same attitude towards terrorism denies them any individuality and makes them nothing more than faces on your publicity poster.
EVEN if it were true that 100% of those affected agreed it should be our No. 1 priority, there are always other groups who can use their own identity leverage. Tell a person dying of terminal cancer that the military budget is more important than funding the NIH's search for more effective treatments.
The amount of effort we expend fighting terrorism is a trade off, like everything else in policy. John C is right that in as far as there is a clearly defined target that has demonstrated itself capable of horrendous, spectacular acts of terrorism it is worth it to root out the problem. Of course, there is the question of how much any particular act against terrorists costs us on other fronts. For example, clamping down on immigration could make us marginally safer, but the US relies on imported talent to continue global leadership in science and technology.
John Kerry was 100% right when he said we can't destroy terrorism, we just have to turn it into a manageable problem. He was immediately pounced on in a wave of jingonistic furor, because we aren't going to allow a single American to be killed by a terrorist. But first, it's just not possible to do. Second, if we do redeploy all of our efforts to eliminating terrorism, what other areas would we have to sacrifice?
Let's have less of this "How dare you say that when lives were destroyed in 9/11" and more of a balanced discussion about how to secure peace and prosperity, including, yes, combating terrorists.

I don't know that everyone is scared of terrorists. If you live in anywhere America, you're right, not much to worry about.
However if you are on a trip into the Middle East, I would certainly have a fair amount of apprehension. And seeing those towers burning on 9/11, you are always going to have it in the back of your mind in a high-rise building in a city like New York that you know how quickly things can go very wrong.

I am not afraid of terrorist, and they should be dealt with according too their actions, not opining of what they may commit. That leads us down a slippery slope of loosing all we have over a few!
That a few die I am more willing to accept than the loss of our liberties that so many paid for with their blood! I am willing to die. I was willing to in Vietnam!
I think we could do a lot more good by tackling the issues, and the myths than running the terrorist light up and down for nothing than mere propaganda! Six idiots in a warehouse doesn't get it!
About the same odds as hitting the lottery!

Isn't being killed by a terrorist considered a freak accident?
And the probability factor? How does apply to the people who have died due to terrorism? They would take little comfort knowing they were a minority.

So, because there is very little chance of being hit by lightning, I shouldn't worry if I stand out in a lightning storm with a metal rod?
Because it is a very small chance to be killed by a terrorist, we should let them do what they want? Would you feel better if the odds increased?
And tell that to the Folks at the WTC, and all the Bombings that continue in Europe....

really, what if he plants an atom bomb in the back of a truck and drives each one to a major city. Did you see the movie Jerico which I am happy is coming back in July.
then the odds go up a whole bunch. Even one nuclear bomb would wipe out a whole city and change the odds over night.
tell that to the parents of the almost 4000 guys who have died in Iraq. Chances are they won't die?
