We haven't learned all the lessons of that history yet. Many of the people doing the genocides haven't studied history, and are doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past. Let's hope your question is the start of a new lesson.

Someone said that complacency is the catalyst for genocide. If not enough people care, if they let things happen, someone will use that to perform horrible acts. I could say it's human/primate nature to persecute 'others', but that would only be part of our destructive nature.

Greed we want what others got and usually genocides are
over land. Like the American Indian they wanted the US.
Then Germany wanted the land the jews had.
Africa they want their land and herds.
