I read somewhere that we all start out as females. As your Y chromosome kicks in male parts develope and female stop. Thus you have half formed breast.

Most of the answers are good. There's no real drawback to having nipples per se, so no selective pressure to lose them. But remember, the nipples don't make the milk--that's done in the mother's mammary glands, when stimulated by the right hormones. Mammal nipples have the same function as the nipples on baby bottles; they're just a pathway for getting the milk into the kid!

Humans of both sexes develop the same in utero until about the third month (about 8-10 weeks after conception). Then, testosterone comes into play for male fetuses. Without the testosterone, the fetus will "continue" to develop as female. Nipples appear before the three-month mark, because they are just that essential to the human species. :-)

I do not know about great answers, but I will give you the facts known. The default body plan in our species is female. You need to make males. At about the 8th week of gestation the hormone surge, testosterone, develops the male fetus, while halting all female developments. About that simple.

PS Give a man enough estrogen and he may very well give milk.

its becuase in the first few weeks (6 i think) all humans are female, u could say "default mode", then after that u become male or stay the same in this time the nipples have already started to develop, hope it helps ya understand as i cant elaborate on why we all are female in the first place

I don't know why but I know that females have milk glands that's why they have breasts and the milk comes out from the nipples.
but in male they do have milk glands but inactive becuse there is no prolactien and other hormons.

PS: my professor says that they are for my girlfriend to lick (he is dame crazy)

men and women are only a tiny bit different in terms of DNA. and all fetuses start out as female then change in utero. since there is no evolutionary benefit to men not having nipples, there is no need to waste DNA space on making them go away.

males are basically modified females. given enough hormones, you too can express milk--however, the volume would probably be little since male mammary glands are typically not as well developed as females.
