Northern White Rhinos and Amur Leopards probably take the cake on that one.
Overall there are many species that are extremely close to extinction but only for certain areas and not overall. For example Brown Bears are almost extinct (less than 40 left) in the Alps, but clearly Brown Bears are not almost extinct as a whole species.
To the person who said Yangtze River Dolphins... too late one that one, they believe they went extinct the end of last year.
To the person who said Manatees, not close on that one either. They are even looking and have proposed to move the West Indian Manatee from endangered to threatened since they have made such a good come back.
