I am going to a wedding and have seen a long black satin dress which is gorgous

Is it appropriate to wear black to a wedding?

PS I am using my boyfriends account, not Martin S who is asking the question- that would be weird!

For along time it was considered bad luck to wear black at a wedding, but thats largely gone tha way of the dodo. Is the wedding during the day or at night? Inside or outside? Black satin for an outdoor/ day wedding is not appropriate. I think you could get away with it for an indoor/night/very formal wedding. JUST DON'T OUT-DO THE BRIDE!!! Keep it low key and simple.

Depends on your place in the wedding party. 20+ years ago a friend's mother found a "mother of the bride" outfit which she and the bride loved. On the day she looked wonderful! the dress had very fine red and cream edging and she wore a cream hat with red and black trim, black accessories and she looked fantastic and took absolutely nothing away from the bride. I've also seen a wedding where the bride wore white with red flowers and the two bridesmaids wore black with red and white flowers. The effect was stunning. It wasn't a 'goth' wedding before you think that!

This may seem strange, but in some countries people, do wear black, black and white to weddings. I have seen these styles in my seamstress' fashion books[ when she use to make clothes for me]. I questioned the lady about these black wedding dresses, and she told me that although, we associate black with funerals, overseas, people wear black to weddings. Strangely the clothes looked very beautiful, and did not seem out of place for a funeral setting. What you want to wear may not be in-appropriate.This does not mean that you are being insulting, giving the wedding couple a rude message.

I think it's okay, I've worn black to a wedding before. I don't think color matters so much as long as the style of the dress is appropriate with the style of the wedding, you know? I would say you're fine to wear it. Have fun!

depending on how formal the wedding is
if you turned up at the wedding wearing black and everyone else turned up wearing white it may make you feel a little uncomfortable
the bride is the one who,s supposed to stand out not you but most importantly have a good time because im sure the bride would prefer the geusts enjoyin themselves rather than them worrying about what to wear

The most important girl at this wedding is the bride, ask her!
The issue is not that you're planning to wear "a funeral" dress to the wedding but whether you will be talked about more than the bride. (Sorry only being honest)

It would only be appropriate if it was a black tie affair or there was a certain color scheme , or if it was a fall wedding ( still it would have to be later in the day). I would stick to a light color for a summer or spring wedding.

As long as you don`t clash with the vicar. LOL
Oops just saw the clarification of your "boyfriends account" ,I suppose if the dress is tasteful then yes.A lot of people wear black to weddings anyway.
