athletic agents help athletes not only get the athlete to the best team, but at best price and future incentives. An agent also help find and negotiate endorsements from sponsors; i.e. shoe deals, clothing deals, commercials, etc.

These negotiations require innate knowledge of deal making, finances and contract law. Alot of agents are also lawyers, or employee contract lawyers as part of the contract negotiation.

Attempting to do this yourself, will take valuable time from you practicing and performing what you do best, playing basketball. You obviously have a talent that is attracting attention, so let a good qualified and researched agent act upon your behalf...this is their respective talent and value.

Pro athletes need agents because the athletes themselves are probably not business school graduates nor are they lawyers. The intracacies of contracts demands experience with both. Also, you need to be a hardball negotiator to deal with owners and general managers. Athletes just out of high school or in college generally aren't prepared for this.

Why would anybody pay a real estate agent to help them sell their house when they could sell it themselves? Why would anybody hire a lawyer to defend them in court when they could do it themselves? Because if you want the job done right, sometimes you need to pay a professional to do it for you.

Professional sports is now a business, not just a profession. Are you that good of a businessman? I think it would be like being your own lawyer if you were on trial.
