They ignore a lot of what he did and only pay attention to his libertarian rhetoric. They love his message and the way he delivered it. He was a great speaker and he was probably a genuine nice guy.

He did a few minor acts that went along with his rhetoric. He took Carter's deregulation and speed it up. This helped the economy so he reaped rewards for that even though it wasn't his idea. He preached tax cuts and tax simplification. In 1986 a major overhaul of the tax code was passed. However, this complicated the tax code, not simplified it. But since the top rates were lowered it was called a tax cut. They ignore the fact that overall during his 8 years as president he was a net tax increaser.

The federal reserve tightened the money supply in causing a terrible recession during the Carter years, for which the conservatives blame Carter. Reagan's initial policies helped end the recession so the conservatives give Reagan credit for any and all economic booms since then.

Abortion is another example. He always talked pro-life, but his policies never did anything to promote life. Here again the conservatives emphasize his rhetoric and ignore his actual policies.

I don't think "quasi-god" is a characterization I would go with. However, you obviously liked the Jimmy Carter beat up US mentality of the 1970's, or the BIll Clinton attempts to ram peace down the middle east's throat without backing anything up or raising taxes through the sky.

Ronald Reagan not only proved that supply side economics really are the key to prosperity- proven by the five post-9/11 years of prosperity under George Bush, but that "peace through strength" leads to the best results in United States foreign policy regardless of the opinion of the rest of the world. Why should we care what euro-trash in Germany and France think? I am sure Hillary if God-forbig she is elected will want to eat a crossiant with pansy French people cheering her.

Conservatives do not view Reagan as a quasi-god. Many conservatives simply think he was the best American President. No conservative worships or prays to Reagan.
