...When I was in year 2 (6/7 years old) my teacher used to tell us a story/poem about a big scary man who would come round to kids houses and chop little children's thumbs off if they sucked them. I can't remember what it's called or who wrote it. I'm hoping one of you fine people will have a clue? Please help, it's driving me mad. Cheers x

Sue the school for allowing a teacher to intimidate children like that. Get checked out by a shrink, and let them know you have been damaged by this foolishness.

Statistically, thumb sucking is/was undertaken by children who are now in the top ten percent of the population intellectually.

What a horrible story to tell children who suck their thumbs! I remember when I was a child, my grandfather told me plant stalks would grow out of my thumb if I sucked it. That was bad enough.

It's actually Struwwelpeter, the name of the book; means 'shock-headed Peter'; there was a pic of this Peter on the front, with crazy hair like the guy in Eraserhead. It had Little Johnny Head-in -Air, and Harriet and the Matches, what else..

Shel Silverstein has a Thumbsuckers poem, but I don't think that's what you are looking for.
