My friend and I are thinking about going to Cozumel in August? I am nervous about hurricanes. Has anyone been in August before? Am I overreacting? It looks beautiful but am very nervous since it's hurricane season. Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

The weather service expects about 7 hurricanes this year total for the entire area. The chances of one hitting Cozumel the same time or before (since that would ruin things too) you get there are remote.

I understand where you are coming from as I went through the same thing. I was suppose to go to New Orleans in '04, and then hurricane Ivan showed up. The person who told you that you will get plenty of warning is and isn't correct. Yes you will know if something is coming, however you won't know with enough certainty where it is going to hit. That uncertainty can ruin your plans. No one will give you a refund or credit unless the hurricane actually hits Cozumel. The problem is you won't know until about 2 days before where the hurricane will hit land and it could be over 100 miles away. If you cancel because you are worried, you might be out the money. I was lucky in that everything including my airfare were credited to a later month, and the hurricane just missed New Orleans (to bad they didn't get the same luck a year later).

That being said, I wouldn't worry and I would go on the trip. I have a niece that will be in Cancun in August and I told here the same thing I am telling you...go.

I've been to Cozumel in August twice and the weather has been beautiful. However, in 2003, we were there in July the day after Claudette came through the area. According to locals (the staff of the dive shop we use), the weather is always more beautful right after a hurricane or tropical depression moves through the area. The only thing they mentioned that might be off is the visibility when diving (ie. visibility of 80 feet vs 100+ ft). I wouldn't worry about hurricanes too much. If you are nervous, buy the trip insurance that's offered - we always do, just in case anything comes up.

I am going on a cruise in August and we are headed to Cozumel too. I've read on some websites, that the "peak" hurricane season for the western caribbean is Mid-Sept thru Nov, although the actual hurricane season is June thru Nov. Knowing that, it put my mind at ease. You should definitely go! Like a previous person said, buy the insurrance.
Have fun!

there's no chance of you getting down there and then suddenly there's a hurricane right over you. if there's a hurricane or bad weather you can easily find out by going to:
