The Hobbit is pretty much my favorite book! It sets the stage for The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. It's the story of how Bilbo Baggins, Frodo's Uncle, sets out o a journey with several Dwarves to go to a place called The Misty Mountains to steal the Dwarves' treasure back from a dragon named Smaug. In the middle he meets Gollum, and ends up with the One Ring. There is adventure, action, humor, yet no romance like there is in LotR. It SOUNDS childish, but it really isn't. It's a wonderful, fun read you're certainly going to enjoy.
If you want to know more about LotR or The Hobbit, there's a wonderful, huge fansite: Councilofelrond.com

The Hobbit is the first book to JR Tolkein's Lord of the Rings series. The ring is first introduced as well Bibo Bagins, and Galndolf. Wikipedia is a great place to pull up short summaries of books inlcuding the Hobbit.
