Shouldn't that be up to the owners? If you own a club, why should you be forced to make it non-smoking? If you don't like the smoke then just go somewhere else, it's not like there's a shortage of clubs around, no one's forcing you to go in. And as for the people who work there, didn't you realise you'd be working in a smoking environment when you took the job??

Smoking is what people do in a pub or club (as well as drinking of course), in fact I know people who don't smoke much unless they're out drinking. So if you know there's cigarette smoke and you're a non smoker, then why the hell would you want to work there?? And why is going to be a law for it?

If they want to make laws to protect people in their workplace, how about banning nuts in the workplace so that people with nut allergies can work in the KP Peanut factory.

It's encouraging to see there's a lot of people who don't like the new laws, and it's especially encouraging to see some non-smokers who think this is taking things too far.

But some non-smokers are still coming out with the "I don't want to breathe your smoke" arguement. Well, why don't you go to a non-smoking pub? You see, unlike you, I believe that there should be a choice, some pubs should be for smokers and some for non-smokers. I don't want to force non-smokers outside, so why should you force smokers to do it. If you don't like the smoke, then don't go into a smokey environment.

I agree, the decision to be smoking or non-smoking should rest with the owner(s) of the premises. Customers would then have the freedom to choose whether to go to a smoking or non-smoking venue. No problem.
I watched a programe on TV recently showing the effect that the smoking ban in Scotland has had on Bingo clubs & they said that 1 in 3 bingo clubs have closed down as a direct result of the ban. These clubs make their money during the intervals when people buy drinks/food & play table bingo or slot machines. Instead of staying in the club & spending their money (& enjoying themselves!) they are going outside for a smoke. Thats a lot of people being put out of work. As well as a lot of people being told they cannot enjoy their evening out in the way they prefer.
Too Orwellian for words I'm afraid!!!

I have bad news for you, in the Netherlands from 01-07-2008 smoking will be banned in restaurants, cafes, bars, nightclubs.

I am a smoker and live in Scotland so have lived with the ban for a while now. It does not stop you smoking all you have to do is walk just out the door or to the outside area they have created. It is actually a great way to meet people that you would not have normally have got talking to. It seems quite daft that people are so annoyed that they will have to walk a few yards to have a cigarette.
I bet a lot of people that are complaining about it now will change their mind once they get used to it and see that it is actually quite a good thing

Get a life!! "Smoking is what people do in a pub or club" I go out to socialise not mess up my lungs because of your foul habit! Apart from the fact that it stinks (it does, it reeks its so disgusting if I don't shower the minute I get home from the pub I have to change my bed clothes and wash the curtains because of the stink!) it KILLS - you may choose to die this way but my son has been hospitalised twice now because of selfish smokers causing severe asthma attacks!

The last one (in a non-smoking restaurant) I asked the woman to put out her cigarette (she was sitting with her own children too!) when we had to call an ambulance so that my son could have oxygen she said "I didn't realise it was serious - I just thought you were being funny" Yeah hilarious watching my son gasp for breath because you're too selfish to go outside and kill yourself where us non-smokers don't have to breathe it!

Roll on July 1st I only wish it was banned in all public places including the streets!!

Because (as seems to have escaped your notice) smoking kills people. And not just the smoker. For once the government is doing something that is actually HELPING everyone. If this ban means just one person quits, it will have saved the lives of more than that one person.

What about people who's friends smoke? DO they just never go with them to a club because of the people smoking there?

Smokers cost the tax payer millions of pounds in health care. So perhaps you suggest we continue to pay for people who insist on ruining their own health. Well, in my opinion, we have the ban on smoking, or we stop treating people who do smoke. That should make them realise what they are doing.

Im a non smoker and I totally agree with you. I go to pubs and if the smokers stay at home it will push up the price of my pint. There is perhaps a case for having separate areas for smoking/non smoking but if we were doing it the old way where every public place has to display what their smoking policy is, everyone can make their own informed choice as to whether or not to enter the premesis.

I quite agree with you that people who take these jobs on should be made aware that its a smoking place and thats the end of it.

When they've got the smoking ban successfully in place then they'll start on drinking, trust me!

to all the smokers out there have some consideration for nonsmokers they would like to go out to the pub and not sit in a smoky environment. also some of the people who work in pubs etc maybe have no choice, they need a job and that may be the only one they can get, why does that mean they have to work in a place that damages their health?
before anyone slates my answer i am a smoker and dont mind moving elsewhere to smoke and allow nonsmokers to enjoy a smoke free environment.

Well I for one won't be doing what I am told to do. I am going to smoke wherever I want to as well.

Why the hell should we be dictated too by all the non smoking hypocritical ninnies. Half of the non smokers now, used to smoke anyway. They get told it is all bad for them, and end up following like sheep.

What I would like to know is if the Government actually did get us all to pack up smoking, what are they going to do about the lost revenue. It must go into billions of tax.

Also I wonder just how many people out there do smoke.
And would they all stand up and be counted.
And if they were counted would they stand up for their rights, as it is supposed to be a free country.

I remember when, if you had been taken to hospital, and were suffering from shock. A nurse or a doctor would light you up a cigarette to calm your nerves, and give you a cup of sweet tea.

Why don't they ban drinking alcohol? There I bet you lot who drink but don't smoke now, are all up in arms, and shouting at me!!!!

You see what I mean.

it is great yet then they could think of of the people who smoke too.... in the event that they provide theory to a serioul rapist (psycological ailment and could be cured) then y think of that people who smoke are doing it on objective.... Having people who smoke give up very without delay makes them greater vonruable to heart assaults.... they could give up progressively so the physique does not be in a ask your self.... the different component is that in the event that they could designate smoking aspects exterior the homes then they could think of of the oblique value born by potential of the corporation.... that's complicated, yet on the tip that's nevertheless a great theory

The dictators at the 'Cardiff Kremlin' brought that law into force here in Wales on the 2nd April this year.
How it is working , I have no idea, I ain't been to a pub since before that date.
Their lose...not mine.
I have no intention of paying nearly £3 for a pint of beer, then have to stand outside in the rain to drink it.
Something so broad sweeping as this law should have gone to a referendum of the people.
There is now nothing stopping the dictators from buying 'green wellie factories ' and 'ordering' the people to wear green wellies in the winter, bought from their factories of course.

KIT FANG...one of the first things Gordon Brown did as chancellor way back when....was to impose a 25 pence levy on a packet of 20 cigs.
..This money went straight into the coffers of the NHS..(so he said..)....if it did not get there...it is not the fault of the smokers.
