It depends on several factors, for example:are you just starting out reading the horror genre? Have a weak stomach? Laurell K Hamilton is good for supernatural forces, Were-Animals/ Vampires etc. but a little too erotic for children. Same is true of Poppy Z Brite. Not all Stephen King books are horror books, but I would Recommend "It" or "The Stand" for SK. Dean Koontz The Bad Place was a real page turner. In my Opinion one very good place to get the answer you are looking for is the YahooGroup HorrorLit

Fear Nothing by Dean R Koontz is one of my favorites. Anything by Bentley Little or John Saul is also good. It or The Stand by Stehen King are also amazing books.
