Most people don't really know the difference between a chopper and a custom. The bikes that you see on "American Chopper" Aren't really choppers to anyone who's been around long enough to know the difference. They're high priced customs, and are most often purchased by RUB posers. The reason choppers are called choppers is that the frames used to be chopped at the neck and raked and stretched. Now they are most often off-the-shelf frames with lots of shiny chrome stuff added to them.
IMHO Anyone who has owned a knuck, a pan, an ironhead, a shovel. or an early Brit bike knows the true soul of a motorcycle...

(BTW, they're not monkey bars... They're ape hangers. And a peanut tank will get ya about 90 miles.)

I see quite a few of them on the road still. Many are production choppers like the American Iron Horse, Saxon, etc. I actually looked at the Iron Horse Outlaw Pro Street a couple weeks back before I decided on the Harley.

Choppers still exist. Take the engine and carbs from an existing motorcycle, mount it in a bare-bones frame, and there, you've got yourself a chopper. I don't see why. Those hardtails don't look comfortable to ride, and those dinky gas tanks... I've seen 'em so small I bet it'd go only 20 miles between fillups.

Do you mean real choppers or the $60,000 chrome and billet and metallic flame paint job "choppers"?

American Iron buyers guide lists 46 different American made v twin complete bike manufacturers so I guess you could say they have become wildly successful although extremely expensive.
