No, he's not really a mean person at all. In fact, I hear that Simon and Ryan are good friends in real life. All the drama is for the show.

Sometimes Simon Can be a burden, but really he is telling the truth usually. Many of the former American Idols say that what Simon said that was mean to them really helped toughen them up becasue when you are recording, the people are just like, "Thats Crap" and they said that Simon Really prepared them for the real world. But who knows, the producers might be telling him to be mean.

Did you see Idol Gives Back. You really saw the human side of Simon during that show. You could see the effect the trip to Africa had on him. I was so moved when I saw him helping the dying woman into a vehicle to get her to the hospital. Or showing Simon with some of the children. It was very touching.
I'm surprised that he let some of that be shown. After all Simon has a 'bad boy' image to uphold.

He seems like a no nonsense kind of person, but I don't think he's mean... Most of the time with Paula and Ryan he is just kidding around. Really the Idol show does need a critic, and he happens to be it. In the real world they will face critics all the time, so he is their first step. To me he is the person who is supposed to tell them whatever the public might think or producers or whoever. Whatever comes out of his mouth its almost like he's saying brace yourself, but this is what the public and the press are going to say about you.
I wouldn't say he's anymore mean than Paula and Randy, because they all laugh and make fun of the people at tryouts.

No, he's not mean, he's like a puppy dog in real life. He comes across mean because he tells the really bad singers that they're really bad.....and doesn't mince any words. It's become his gimmick and helps the ratings of AI. Didn't you see him in Africa on the American Idol gives back show. He was playing and laughing with the sick children.

I believe he is rude and mean for a reason. The people on that show are supposed to be truly competing for a chance at the business and it's not for the faint-hearted. I don't think he's any meaner than record producers everywhere--he may even be nicer--and if they can't take his criticism, they can't last in the music industry. All creative fields have people telling you how it is and you have to learn to cope with it and not hold onto bad feelings.

well he was (and still is) on similar British shows a long time before American Idol and he was exactly the same way on them, so if anyone's encouraging him to be like that its not the AI producers specifically
personally I like him.

i think he sorta is that way in real life he probably over does it for the sake of ratings. what i don't understand is...is paula tone deaf or so sickly sweet having really nothing all that bad to say to the contestant to keep from hurting their feelings? most of the time i pretty much agree with simon he's not giving them false hope if they can't make it.
